What Is CEREC?

One of the technological developments that benefit our patients is CEREC, which stands for chairside economic restoration of esthetic ceramics. That means that we can make permanent crowns and other ceramic restorations right in our Wilmington dental office!

How Does It Work?

CEREC utilizes CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture) technology. That means instead of taking a physical impression of your teeth, Dr. Caselle takes a number of digital scans to measure the size and shape of your restoration as well as its placement in relation to your other teeth. Once we have that data, we feed it into a software program that designs your restoration. Dr. Caselle is there to verify the information to ensure accuracy.

Next, we send the information to our milling unit, and Dr. Caselle oversees the manufacture of your restoration. Once your restoration is milled, he will provide the finishing touches by making any necessary adjustments and then painting and glazing it. Ceramic restorations can look identical to your natural teeth and blend beautifully with your smile.

Our patients benefit from CEREC technology in a couple of ways, starting with the accuracy of CEREC restorations. Because we use computers to take digital impressions, we eliminate the element of human error that often occurs when taking physical impressions. Sometimes impressions distort or have air bubbles and we need to re-do the impression.

Patients also benefit because CEREC eliminates the need for an outside dental lab to fabricate your restoration. This cuts down on the amount of time it takes for you to get a permanent restoration in your mouth. In fact, in most cases, we have your permanent restoration available on the same day! Some labs can take up to a month, depending on how busy they are, and can even take longer if a problem occurs.

Lastly, and perhaps most important to our patients, CEREC makes restorations more affordable. By eliminating the middleman, the necessity for a temporary crown, and reducing the likelihood of having to retake impressions multiple times, we can pass along savings to you.
